By the time the Mountain trial at St. Etienne came around, Bjarne Riis was already almost 5 minutes down on G.C. to team-mate Jan Ullrich.
Clearly Riis was hoping to show well in the time trial, yet finished 3rd on the day, over 3 minutes down on Ullrich, just behind Richard Virenque.
